Emthonjeni Care Centre:  Providing Love and Compassion to People Infected and Affected by the HIV/AIDS Epidemic

SECTION 21

Emthonjeni – Fountain of Life Care Centre is a registered organization classified as a Non-Government Organization under Section 21 Companies Act of South Africa.

LOCATION

Historically Emthonjeni has operated in two sites, in Soweto and at the Kehillah Farm.

Pimville, Soweto

Our first site was located in Pimville Soweto, where for over five years we serviced the surrounding community as well as the KlipTown and Klipspruit informal settlements. The Soweto site operated as a counseling, training and administrative center as well as the headquarters for our Home-Based Care and visitation outreach.

The Kehillah Farm Site

Situated on 42 acres and is approximately 30 km South of Johannesburg. Our work at Kehillah started in 2003 when the farm was donated to us. The farm is surrounded by three informal settlements, which are Sweetwaters, ThulaMntwana and Weilers Farm.

HISTORY

Since its inception in 2001, Emthonjeni Fountains of Life Care Centre has offered a holistic and compassionate response to the HIV/Aids pandemic.

This has been done by a means of a community-based approach, which has focused on individual and collecting empowerment in the face of this disease.

SUSTAINABILITY

From its inception Emthonjeni has experienced significant growth and has shown indications of strength in building its sustainability.

Emthonjeni also works in accordance with the South African governments’ comprehensive plan for care, management and treatment of HIV/AIDS strategy.

Emthonjeni looks forward to continuing program expansion to tackle some of the other challenges in settlement living.

2007 STRATEGIC PLAN

Coming Soon:  Our 2007 to 2010 Emthonjeni Strategic Plan is in its final review and should be published soon.

THE NEED

Emthonjeni is situated about 30 km South of Johannesburg in the Orange Farm informal settlements. This area is one of three that the South African government prioritized due to them being the poorest in Gauteng. Our focus area has an estimated population of about 30,000 people. The challenges people face in these areas are:

ü   Due to lack of proper housing facilities the people live in shacks. (An average of 4 people living in less than 24 Square Meters or 80 Square Feet)

ü   High unemployment, poverty and child headed households

ü   2/3 of the homes do not have electricity.  None have running water.

ü   Estimated over 11,000 people infected with HIV/AIDS in the targeted settlements

ü   Refuse collection is limited leading to challenging sanitary conditions and outbreaks of parasitic infestations & Gastro Enteritis.

* Pictures on this site are not necessarily HIV/AIDS Patients.  They are Caregivers, Staff and those seeking Medical Advice for other than AIDS.
